History

The MC Mehatpur-Basdehra town is situated on Chandigarh-Dharamshala Highway at the entry point of Himachal Pradesh. The southern side of the town is attached with Punjab State. The town is well connected with Railways, Delhi – Una Himachal line.

The town came into existence in year 1978 by declaring the Municipal Council Basdehra and Mehatpur as Notified Area Committee Mehatpur-Basdehra, now called as Municipal Council Mehatpur-Basdehra.

The town was Previously a village of Tehsil Una District Hoshiarpur in Punjab State prior to 1966. The area came to picture being nearby area of the biggest Hydroelectic project Bhakhra- Nangal after independence & also adjoining area to National Fertilizer Limited Nangal. The town is on the way to important reglious places like Shri Mata Naina Devi ji, Shiri Mata Chintpurni ji, Sh Mata Jawala ji, Shri Mata Brajeshwari Devi ji Kangra, Maa Chamunda Devi ji, Shri Baba Balak Nath Deout Sidh etc, tourist points like Dharamshala, Dalhousie.

The Town is situated in Himalyan plains near to basin river Satluj. Bhakhara Dam and Nangal Township are important neighboring tourist places as well as the places of National importance to India. The District headquarter Una is located at distance of 12 Kilometer and State headquarter Shimla at distance of 210 kilometer from Municipal Council Mehatpur-basdehra town. The town is famous for industrial activities in the Pradesh having a good Industrial Area .

MC Mehatpur-Basdehra town is situated in Himalayan plains in Shiwalik range at mean sea level 360 meter. The total area of town is 3.50 sqkm. The population as per 2011 Census is 9220 and the present population is about 12000. The floating population of this town is about 9000.

MC Mehatpur-Basdehra town is a business centre of daily needs to the surrounding villages, industrial point having importance in Himachal Pradesh, transport centre for bricks, LPG cylinders serving major area of Himachal Pradesh. The occupation of local residents is agriculture, animal husbandry, services in Govt. and private sector, serving in NFL Nangal and BBMB. The local residents are also attached with the profession of transport. The outside labourers working in different industrial units, brick kilns also resides in this town.

The town was previously a village, hence the streets are narrow in a zigzag manner and the mohallas are tightly placed. The State Govt. has provided the facility of water supply through I&PH department. The sewerage system is under construction . There are three educational institutions which include two number Govt. Primary Schools and one number Govt. Senior Secondary School & Five No Private models School including one DAV School The town is having one Govt. Primary Health Centre,ESI Hospital, Five No Private Hospitals, one Govt. veterinary Hospital, Sub Division of State Electricity Board, Sub Division of IPH, B&R , Police post etc. Under union services one number Sub Division of telephone department, six number branches of Nationalized Banks, one post office are available here.

The municipal CouncilĀ is playing an important role for economic development and social justice including performance functions like urban planning, regulation of land use and construction of buildings, roads and bridges, public health sanitation conservancy and solid waste management, urban forestry protection of the environment and promotion of ecological aspects, safe guarding the interest of the weaker sections of society, slum improvement and up gradation, urban poverty alleviation, provision of urban amenities and facilities such as parks, gardens and play grounds, promotion of cultural educational and ethic aspects, burial and burial grounds, cremations and cremation grounds, cattle ponds for prevention of cruelty to animals, vital statistics including registration of birth and death, marriages, public amenities including street lighting, parking lots, public conveniences etc.

The Municipal Council is trying to provide best possible services to the local residents through its own income sources and through grant-in-aid provided by State Govt. and Central Govt.
